FORT WORTH, Texas — Bell Helicopter, a unit of Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT), today announced that its Eagle Eye TR918 Unmanned Aircraft System, or UAS, has received its certificate of airworthiness for experimental flight testing from the Federal Aviation Administration. This certification represents the first certificate of airworthiness for experimental flight-testing ever issued by the FAA to a vertical lift UAS. This is a tremendous accomplishment that many people from both Bell Helicopter and the FAA have been working very hard to achieve, explained Kevin Connell, Vice President of Bell Helicopters XworX facility. Not only are we celebrating the certification of the Eagle Eye TR 918, but we are also celebrating the fact that with this first ever certificate of airworthiness for experimental testing of a vertical lift unmanned aircraft, Bell Helicopter is once again leading the way in the vertical lift industry. Flight testing will be conducted at a recently opened Bell XworX facility in West Texas. This is another example of Bell Helicopters leadership in vertical lift technology, said Bell Helicopter Chief Executive Officer, Mike Redenbaugh. The successful experimental flight certification of Bells Eagle Eye TR918 UAS is the culmination of nearly a year of preparations, coordination and cooperation between Bell Helicopter and the FAA.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

SYRACUSE - Some local costume retailers feared consumers would rem in spending this Halloween season in the wake of recent high-profile hurricanes and rising energy prices. However, strong sales at the cash register are proving otherwise, local storeowners say. “We started off a little slow; I really feel that [Hurricane] Katrina look a number on people,” Denise Dougherty Vinal, owner of Doughertys Fun Services, Inc., which operates the 10,000-square-foot Doughertys Masquerade store at 3011 Erie Blvd. East in Syracuse and its 3,400-square-foot counterpart at the Great Northern Mall in Clay.Dougherty Vinal expects that sales at her two stores this Halloween season are likely to exceed last years. The nature of Halloween - the escape it offers - helps boost business even during challenging times, she adds.
PROVO — Halloween is getting bigger, and so are the budgets for costumes. The most popular costumes for both genders are pirates, due to the Johnny Depp influence, said Taylor Maid owner Rick Taylor. The costume store is stocking lots of choices in buccaneer costumes, hats, swords and even coins. Women are going for sexier costumes, Taylor said — Snow White or Little Red Riding Hood in a short skirt and ruffled tops. Of course, the traditional witch costume remains popular.

Officials target minorities in occupancy code raidsLook at this. She had to tell them about her Cesarean scar,” reporter Beth Hundsdorfer told me as we pored over a pile of photocopied city housing department records.Hundsdorfer was angry. I could see why. A 25-year-old mother who was getting her children ready for school was forced to undergo the indignity of describing her body scars to a male police officer. It would have been different if the woman had been suspected of a crime, but she wasnt.

Muslim immigrant families living in the United States may well come to the attention of mental health professionals. This article examines the applicability of the Anglo-American models of family therapy to Muslim immigrant families. The most significant differences in value systems between the Muslim and Anglo-American cultures is Muslim families preference for greater connectedness, a less flexible and more hierarchical family structure, and an implicit communication style. There is an increasing interest among family scholars, researchers, and therapists in understanding cultural diversity, family systems, and the impact of religious ideology on family life (Falicov, 1988; Haj-Yahia, 1995; McGoldrick, 1993; Modares, 1981; Tseng Hsu, 1991). However, there remains a lack of information on Islamic ideology and its impact on the lives of Muslim immigrant families living in the United States. Islam is a monotheistic religion, civilization, and way of life practiced by 1.1 billion people (Bill, 1994). Shortly after the year 2000, for the first time in history, the number of Muslims will surpass the number of Christians in the world (Bill, 1994). Islam is the religion of the majority of citizens in the Near East, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and much of northern Africa. Large numbers of people in Indonesia, Malaysia, and China also live in accordance with Islamic traditions (Fellows, 1979; Ludwig, 1989).

Because I dabble in a little bit of everything. I consider myself a mixed-media artist and teacher. And I literally mean mixed media because Ive got my fingers into a lot of things and a little of others. Im a decorative painter, I alter. I journal. I stamp, I make books. I do wire wrapping. I bead (well, Im learning!)–but polymer clay remains one of my favorite mediums. I love to learn new arts and techniques and just wish that there were more hours in the day to take all the classes and play with what Ive learned. Making Clay Tiles 1. Roll Black Sculpey clay through a pasta machine on the largest setting until it reaches a size of approximately 5 1/2 w X 8 h. 2. Thoroughly powder the texture plate with talcum. 3. Put texture plate and clay together and run through pasta machine on the largest setting. 4. Trim off the excess clay and cut out tiles of individual textures. 5. Sort out good tiles from bad and return bad tiles to scrap pile of clay to rerun with texture plate. 6. Note: Inside texture tiles run approx. 3/4 X 1 1/2 Set aside for now. For the box pictured we used 25 small rectangular tiles and 25 large square tiles. 7. Trim block tiles to 1 X 1 squares with the help of grid paper. 8. Apply Pearl Ex to the desired tiles, including the 3/4 X 1 1/2 tiles.
CC Tile Remodeling, a 15-year-old Salt Lake City tile installation contractor, has purchased approximately 2.5 acres at 3422 S. 300 W., South Salt Lake, where it plans to build a 15,000 square foot granite fabrication shop and a 5,500 square foot office and showroom. He said ground should be broken within the next 30 days and that completion of the granite fabrication facility is slated for approximately Dec. 1. The office/showroom should open about a month later. Roger Knight Construction will act as general contractor. The move from tile installer to granite, products fabricator has been in the works for more than a year, awaiting the right location at the right time, Coates said.
Another passion was pottery, particularly redwares made in eastern Pennsylvania in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Mercer was concerned that these handmade objects also might disappear in favor of modern table-wares. This prompted him to establish the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in 1898, which even at the height of production had only sixteen employees. While molds were used to fashion the tiles, each was decorated by hand, ensuring that no two tiles would be identical–the hallmark of handcraftsmanship. The sources for the decorations were prints, stove plates, and antique tiles in private and museum collections, among them the British Museum in London, the National Germanic Museum in Nuremberg, the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, and the Basilica of Saint Apollinaris in Ravenna, Italy. Mercer founded the pottery at an auspicious moment for the use of tiles in domestic and civic architecture had enjoyed a revival beginning in the 1880s when they were used on floors, walls, and ceilings. Those made at the Moravian Pottery were offered in a wide variety of styles and types of decoration, or they could be purchased blank. In 1904 the pottery was awarded the grand prize at the Saint Louis Exposition, and Mercers tiles could be found in places as diverse as Graumans Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The original pottery burned in 1910 and was replaced by a new one constructed of reinforced concrete, which was in operation in 1912. At Mercers death in 1930 the pottery was inherited by Frank King Swain, who had long been its manager and Mercers assistant in all of his collecting endeavors. There were several subsequent owners until the pottery ceased production in the mid-1950s. Today, the pottery is on the National Register of Historic Places and is back in operation, administrated by the Bucks County Department of Parks and Recreation as a working history museum.

Comfortable style transforms this backyard into an inviting family retreat. SUSANNE HUDSON DOESNT LIKE LEAVING her garden. Its easy to understand why. A finer example of blending home and garden exists only in the imagination. Marrying salvaged artifacts with a keen eye for design, she has fashioned a series of elegant, distinctive, and supremely comfortable garden rooms for which decking and grass are the floors, gravel paths are the hallways, and trees and sky are the ceilings. The Queen of Stuff Known affectionately to friends as “The Queen of Stuff,” Susanne collects all sorts of old garden paraphernalia-either treasures she chances upon or things folks drop off at her house. Artistic displays of old nozzles, sprinklers, watering cans, rakes, and clay pots abound. Regular pilgrimages to major antiques markets provide other articles. This is how the outdoor living room, the visual heart of her garden, came to be.

Colorado Springs-area home construction continued its blistering pace in the first quarter, although one economist fears an oversupply could drive down prices in the next few years. Single-family home building permits totaled 1,392 from January through March — a 20.2 percent jump from the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. The number of permits this year puts Colorado Springs and El Paso County on pace to shatter the record of 5,059 single-family permits, set only last year.
Roger Knight Construction also has completed the building of Wes Quick Lube in Heber. The 1,800-square-foot facility is located at 1240 S. Main at the intersection of Highways 40 and 189 in downtown Heber.

Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.
In the final quarter of 2007, passenger transport saw the largest increase in air transport and the largest decline in city bus transport. Within land passenger transport, the declining trend of bus transport continued. The annual decline in the number of passengers in intercity and city bus transport (-3.9% and -3.5%, respectively) was also similar to the average annual decrease in the last three years (5.9% and 3.3%, respectively). The volume of railway passenger transport in the final quarter of 2007 did not strengthen significantly year on year; the 2.4% growth recorded in 2007 was also only slightly above the three-year average (2.1%). Air transport and airport transport posted vigorous growth in the final quarter of last year (27.6% and 19.6% year on year, respectively). The increases in 2007 (13.7% and 13.3%, respectively) were also somewhat greater relative to the average annual rises in the last few years. In air transport, this also enabled an increase in aircraft fleet (lease of one and purchase of two new aircrafts) and in airport transport, the completion of the first phase of the new passenger terminal and arrival of two new airline companies, which started to fly regularly from Ljubljanas airport last year. Within freight transport, road transport has increased significantly, whereas maritime freight transport is still decreasing slightly, following the boom recorded in this branch two years before. In the final quarter last year, the volume of freight transport by rail decreased by 3.7% relative to the same quarter of 2006, whereas 2007 as a whole saw a solid 6.8% growth, which exceeded the average growth in the last three years (4.6%). Road freight transport strengthened by as much as 19.1% in the final quarter of 2007; the high 13.4% annual growth nevertheless fell short of the annual average of the last three years by almost 2.p.p. Against the background of favourable international trends, maritime freight transport increased by a respective 30.6% and 41.8% in 2004 and 2005, whereas it dropped by a respective 6.4% and 5.2% in 2006 and 2007. The fall in the volume of maritime transport in the final quarter last year (-8.7%) indicates that the slowdown continues. Harbour freight transport in the final quarter and in 2007 as a whole recorded only a slight increase, particularly compared to the high 22.5% growth in 2006 (average annual growth in the last three years totalled 9.5%). Road freight transport by domestic carriers recorded a much stronger increase than railway freight transport over the last few years, largely due to the increasing international transport (see graph). The volume of road freight transport (in tonne kilometres - tkm), which was almost as much as three times greater than railway transport in 2004, increased by 4,728 million tkm until 2007 (by 52.5%), whereas railway transport increased only by 454 million tkm (by 14.4%). In three years, road freight transport became almost four times greater than railway transport; the share of road transport within freight transport rose to 79.2%. Road transport growth strengthened particularly after Slovenias accession to the EU and mainly through increased international transport (see SEM 1/2008: 14). The largest increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage, by 2,161 million tkm (by 155.2%). International transport of goods loaded in Slovenia increased by 1,323 million tkm (by 49.4%) and international transport of goods unloaded in Slovenia by 937 million tkm (by 35.1%). National road transport in Slovenia increased by a mere 306 million tkm (by 13.5%).

SYRACUSE — Police now believe a 17-year-old boy acted alone when he allegedly vandalized a church under construction. Police announced in a press release Wednesday that they do not believe anyone helped him damage an LDS stake center under construction near 2300 West and 1900 South. Police originally were searching for at least other two people who acted with the 17-year-old boy, who is a member of the LDS Church and apparently was not motivated by hate, police said. Shoe prints left at the scene belonged to a construction worker, the statement said.

By Stephen Webber 125 pages/2-vinyl record set/English Berklee Press 2002/ISBN 0-634-01434-X Available in both English and Spanish editions, this first of its kind text/instructional package teaches the student to play the turntable as a musical instrument. This guidebook and 2-vinyl record set provide an excellent instructional method–technically and historically accurate–toward the DJ element in todays pop culture. The learning process starts with the fundamentals of scratching, beat matching, mixing, cutting, cross fader techniques and the transformer. Numerous photographs and musical exercises are included throughout the textbook, together with tips on how the pros set up their gear for performances. Theres also a brief history of Dj-ing and hip-hop culture, as well as interviews with top DJs including DJ Swamp (Beck), MixMaster Mike (Beastie Boys), DJ QBert (Invisibl Skratch Picklz), DJ Kuttin Kandi (5th Platoon/Anomalies), DJ A-Trak (Teenage DMC/ITF World Champion), and DJ Craze (repeat DMC World Champion). The companion vinyl records provide the necessary grooves, scratch material, and exercises for DJs/turntablists of any level. After mastering the 58 exercises in this method, you can play the turntable like a professional DJ and be on the way to create your own personal style. Maria A. Chenique quite ably translates the Spanish edition, making either edition a one of a kind tool. Also available from Berklee Press are additional tools for DJs including Vital Vinyl, Volumes 1-5 (a limited edition series of 12 records) featuring originally created loops, grooves, break beats, vocals, and sound effects for DJs, rappers, producers, and re-mixers.
World music The anarchist musical collective Ojos de Brujo (ODB), a 10-piece from Barcelona, refer to their music as “flamenkillo” - it is flamenco mixed with elements of hip-hop, including scratching/ turntablism and rap, as well as funk, salsa, reggae, and even Indian music.

SAN MATEO RESIDENT Alan Merrifield, who owns a San Francisco pest control business, sees the California Structural Pest Control Board as a nuisance.Merrifield, 66, believes that with more than three decades of practicing non-toxic pest control, he should not have to obtain a state license that requires a two-year apprenticeship and would include using pesticide on rats, pigeons and other “pests.” So Merrifield, with the help of Pacific Legal Foundation, is suing the Structural Pest Control Board and California Attorney General Bill Lockyer. “Ive rejected this license because I dont want to go out and use pesticides,” Merrifield said. “And, also, in order for me to (obtain) this license Id have to close down my business for two years and at the age of 66, go out and become someones apprentice.”
A few weeks ago I was at a vineyard looking at some equipment that can be used with netting. After taking up two hours of the growers time we decided to head up to the tasting room and enjoy a little fruit of the labor. I had a couple of people with me who were from the Eastern part of the country and hadnt had a chance to taste some of the California wines, so they were more than happy to spend some time tasting, and buying, as it turned out. While we were working I had noticed a couple of other vehicles passing through, headed toward the tasting room as well. Once we entered, our host was immediately recognized. The first question out of everyones mouth was, What were you doing out there? When bird control was the answer, I could tell from the look on the faces present that we were in for a show. The next five to ten minutes were spent covering everything from propane cannons to netting to chemicals. The amount of misinformation was amazing. These people clearly felt that anything that had to do with bird control was a complete waste of time, irritating to look at and listen to. Why? Well because, those birds cant possibly be that damaging to your wine-grapes - theyre just little birds after all. When you have enough experiences like this you begin to get a feel for the public perception regarding animal damage control. As a grower or winemaker you are involved so heavily in the industry that some things are taken for granted. Everyone realizes that gophers, ground squirrels, starlings and finches are vineyard pests who damage grapes - right? Wrong. A very large percentage of your customers, lets say 75% conservatively, do not think you have any sort of problems with wildlife. What do you think of when you see a deer, or a covey of quail, or some cottontail rabbits in your vineyard? I can guarantee that the terms, Oh, how cute, or Hey, look at those deer dont usually come to mind. I cant print what usually comes to mind for most growers. However, for the people that we encountered in the aforementioned tasting room, as well as for a large percentage of your customer base, seeing wildlife is all part of the vineyard experience.
Useful tables of information and focused lists of suggested readings. Emphasis on such techniques as mechanical control of pests, uses of beneficial insects and pheromones to control pests, traps, and non-toxic compounds as alternatives to toxic chemical. Interesting section on how and why weeds survive so well.

Hedge the risks; reap portfolio benefits. Like mortgage loans, mobile home loans have been extremely popular in recent years because of the low interest rate environment. While offering mobile home loans gives credit unions opportunities to expand their portfolios, the downside to offering any type of home loan is the potential for having a high percentage of fixed-rate, long-term loans on the books should rates rise. Stampers FCU has about $38 million in loans, including about $500,000 in loans for mobile homes, generally doublewide structures built on a metal chassis. About 75 percent of these loans are for mobile homes, permanently affixed on land lots for which we hold the mortgage.

CHERIE Blairs dodgy dress sense has been dealt another blow after a designer jacket she donated to charity failed to attract a single bid. Aberdonians shunned the black scoop-neck Sheri Bodell jacket at a charity auction in the city. Sue Ryder Care, which operates homes for the sick and disabled, will now try to sell it again at an auction in England later this year. Regional co-ordinator Helen Jocelyn said: “It attracted a lot of attention during viewing, but no one went for it.
Leather JacketSoldiers of the Roman Empire invaded the lands of northern Europe and discovered Teutonic nomads wearing leather garments as protection against the harsh elements. When these soldiers returned to Rome with leather pants, the toga-garbed officials of the city tried to ban their use, but to no avail. Romans were soon using leather for shoes and tunics as well as for breastplates and shields. In fact, the first recorded tanning guild was formed in the Roman Empire.
Red Jacket Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a Seneca Tribal Commander who lent support to the British during the Revolutionary War. He also fought to prevent conversions to Christianity among the Iroquios. Although Red Jacket eventually allied himself with other Indian nations in support of the British during the American Revolution, he was originally hesitant about the affiliation. This ambivalence perhaps explains why he did little fighting during the conflict. According to a number of accounts, Red Jackets reluctance to fight was perceived as cowardice by some Iroquois war leaders such as Corn-planter and Joseph Brant.

Theres a lovely number by Loudon Wainwright III called The Swimming Song that evokes the delights of bathing with both sharp wit and faux-naïf innocence. Kate and Anna McGarrigle covered it on their eponymous 1975 debut album — one of the all-time great records in my view, mixing folky exuberance and wrenching heartache in a manner that never seems to go stale — and in recent weeks I too have been singing The Swimming Song. All this will sound wildly unlikely to anyone who knows me but I swear it is true.

TAMPA, Fla. — TAMPA, Fla., March 11 /PRNewswire/ — More than 70 nursing homes in Florida have signed onto a new federal program to improve care for their residents. They are responding to the new Nursing Home Quality Initiative, aimed at improving the quality of nursing home care. The program is designed to improve care by providing data that allows the public to compare quality measures between specific nursing homes. The program also funds specialized quality improvement organizations in each state that help nursing homes use known best practices to address weaknesses and improve care. Available consumer information includes such topics as the prevalence of physical restraints at a nursing home and the percentage of residents with pressure sores.
More than 250 nursing homes volunteered to participate in this pilot, either working with their state Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) or the corporate office if they were part of a multi-facility chain. These pilot nursing homes committed to attendance at four learning sessions and an outcomes congress. Participants from the nursing homes included leadership, nurses and direct care staff. Individual QIOs and corporations were free to structure the learning sessions to best meet the needs of their customers. Thus, some offered 8 fourhour sessions, others held 4 eight-hour sessions, depending on their abilities to meet their individual staffing needs and concerns. These nursing homes received education, tools and exercises to help them challenge a long-standing institutionalized culture that often prevents residents from enjoying the freedom and daily activities that so naturally create home. The sessions included an overview of transformational change, leadership practices, clinical change concepts and information pertaining to workforce retention. The nursing home assumed all travel costs, staff time and costs associated with the changes they made to their systems. The reality faced by many who move into a nursing home is a loss of control that can lead to psychic despair and depression in many older individuals and can create a multitude of other problems. Being checked for wetness every two hours throughout the night (if it is not necessary for the particular resident) interrupts sleep and can lead to sleep deprivation. To offset this problem, a resident might be given medication to either offset behaviors or to aid in sleep. This can contribute to falls, which sets the ball in motion for reduced mobility, strength, and appetite. The system is designed to create die outcome it achieves. In order to create better outcomes, there is a critical need to improve the system of care which impacts so critically on the lives of residents. For the many residents suffering from advanced dementia in our nations nursing homes, this individualized approach to care acknowledges and incorporates the distinct knowledge of the resident that their caregivers and family are able to offer. The pilot sought to assist nursing home teams initiate change and stop processes that reinforce institutional culture. The pilot led staff through a process known as the “Way of Inquiry” to discover for themselves what it was like to experience the harshness of their nursing home environment, systems and schedules and to find ways to create change based on these “irritants.” The result was the adoption of new processes that put dignity and humanity back into many areas of nursing home life including but not limited to bathing, dining, relationships and dying.

The protocolsdeveloped by physicians, pharmacists, and nursesare designed for clinicians to adapt to meet specific needs and to address specific patient populations. Summary points In general, no antidepressant drug is clearly more effective than another Outcome can be significantly improved by non-pharmacological factors, such as good therapeutic alliance between the doctor and the patient A practical approach is to prefer newer antidepressants in mildly and moderately depressed patients and tricyclic antidepressants or venlafaxine in severely depressed patients
Trends in Drug Treatment of Hypercholesterolemia The study included 345 patients with hyperlipidemia who underwent coronary angiography for symptomatic cardiovascular disease between 1982 and 1987. Patients were considered to be hyperlipidemic if they were either being treated for hypercholesterolemia or had a total plasma cholesterol level over 180 mg per dL (7.25 mmol per L). The percentage of patients who were receiving drug therapy prescribed for hypercholesterolemia increased from 13 percent in 1982 to 59 percent in 1987. Despite this increase, most of those treated did not receive optimum therapy. Only half of the patients were treated aggressively enough to reduce the total plasma cholesterol concentration to 240 mg per dL (6.20 mmol per L). Less than 20 percent of patients reached a target plasma cholesterol level of 200 mg per dL (5.15 mmol per L), as recommended by the current National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines.

Civil engineering construction continued to increase in the third quarter. The value of construction put in place in this segment of construction was 26.2% higher than a year ago. A year-on-year decrease was recorded only in the construction of residential buildings (see table). In interpreting the value of construction put in place, we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller firms (see note below table), whose main activity is estimated to be residential construction. According to seasonally adjusted data, activity increased relative to the previous quarter only in civil engineering, whereas activity in residential construction was at its lowest point in the last two and a half years. The growth of employment in the construction sector continued. In the nine months to September, the number of employees surged by 11.0%. As in 2006, the highest increases in employment were recorded in general construction and building completion. The share of firms that were unable to find workers declined in November after Octobers record-high value. According to business trends in construction, 47% of enterprises (employing 52% of workers) reported “shortages of skilled workers” as a limiting factor in November. This figure is smaller than in the previous two months, but still well above the average value of this indicator in the last five years (since data have been available).
CONSTRUCTIONFor those companies that decide to expand via new construction, the experience can be an unsettling one, full of uncertainties. In fact, relatively few startup businesses choose construction as their mode of entry due to the higher costs associated with it and the greater length of time involved from the breaking ground stage to the day when the establishment opens its doors for business. Small- and mid-sized businesses, however, are far more likely to have the financial wherewithal to launch a new construction project. Such firms have a proven track recordwhich can help them with financingand already-productive operations that bring in revenue that can be used to defray the costs of construction.Owners of these businesses, however, should fully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of construction before moving forward. As the J.K. Lasser Institute indicated in How to Run a Small Business, Building has the advantage of giving you the space and arrangements which meet your needs, providing you know specifically and objectively what the needs are. The obvious disadvantages are the delay in occupancy while land acquisition, design work, and building are going on, and the cost of overruns and mistakes caused by forecasting errors and planning oversights.

Business Editors The Internet Marketing Edge launches its 10 step method to successfully selling on-line. This book will give you the edge on Internet marketing guaranteed or your money back.
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon

The joys of flying on your birthday have been much discussed in this column: cakes, champagne and even upgrades can be laid on for the celebrant. But Kate Thorman of Oxford found that becoming 12 provided her with a Catch-22 problem. “So, on the one hand Kate is old enough to pay the adult fare, but on the other hand she is too young to travel without a paid escort,” says her exasperated father. At this point, Mr Thorman gave up and booked with another airline; then poor Kate found her birthday flight delayed by four hours at Birmingham airport. “Come back, Gorbachev, all is forgiven,” pleads Philip Robinson of Sheffield. “The last time I visited my friend in Minsk, this city was in the USSR. I flew to Moscow, took a train to Minsk, and all was well.”

From Mr Robert Danskin Sir: I write to congratulate you on John Arlidges report (15 July) about the “Skye high” toll road bridge controversy. Since then, we directors of the Skye Boat Company have been overwhelmed by expressions and offers of support. Remarks such as “We will never use the bridge” or “Weve resolved to use Glenelg or Mallaig in future, but now hope this will not be necessary” (because of our proposed private ferry) are among the many received, with donations to match, from regular visitors to Skye.
Sir: More power to Adrian Morgan, his boatbuilding activities, and his hosts at Ullapool (”Boil in the bag boat, 30 March). It cant be pointed out often enough that wooden boatbuilding is not a dying craft; moreover it is one practised more widely than at a few outposts on the Celtic fringe.

The Good, the Bad and the Queen, Damon Albarns latest act of musical reinvention, enters the chart at No 2 and is evidence of the Gorillaz mans genuinely questing musical spirit; may The View prove to have a similarly far-sighted outlook.
If anyone should be an inspiration to the legions of non-Latin Europeans dutifully signing on for GCSE salsa classes, Larry Harlow should. Jewish, and the son of a band leader and an opera singer, Harlow veered abruptly towards Latin street music, rather than jazz or the classics at the Music Art High School in New York in the 1950s. “We were right beside Spanish Harlem - I used to listen to the music in the Latino grocers shops.” In the 1960s and 1970s his novel rearrangements of trombone, trumpet, violin and flute sections moved him to the centre of New Yorks Latin scene, working with artists like Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barreto and Willie Colon, the generation whose tough new hybrid sound first came to be called salsa. Harlow was the first artist to be signed by the seminal Fania label, co-wrote the Latin rock opera Hommy (Mark 2 version on the way), played for the famous Mohammed Ali-George Foreman fight in Zaire (a fiasco: everyone came for the fight, not the concert). The last decade has been spent with his own band touring the world. Last year conga ace Ray Barreto had the idea, inspired by the “fantasy band”, an ad hoc group of jamming jazz stars, of reconvening Harlow, himself, singer Adalberto Santiago and cuatro player Yomo Toro as the Latin Legends Band. Thus Harlow makes his first ever London appearance on Saturday (Barreto is a regular performer and Santiago was here last year). No longer a breath- bating prospect, perhaps, but a most intriguing one.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
